Here at Richmond Wheel and Castor Co., we specialise in helping industries move things quickly, efficiently, and safely, without harm to their employees or their equipment. That might sound very narrow, but you’d be surprised by how much of industry is simply moving things from one place to another. From carts and wheelbarrows to pulleys, pipes, and irrigation systems to ladders, moving blankets, and bins, we make sure everything runs smoothly by either making or reinforcing the equipment with the best parts. We’re most known and trusted for our wheels and castors, but we sell hundreds of different products all made to the highest standard. Our designs have been improving and updating since 1958, which means our products and methods have been refined until they’re basically flawless. In other words, we don’t sell anything that’s subpar. If it’s not perfect, it gets adjusted or entirely remade. Read More

Find Polyurethane Lagging and Other Durable Products with Us

Bigger companies are notorious for letting quality and good service slip as they grow, but we’re still that same family business that was founded over 60 years ago. We still treat each sale as a mark of pride, each product as a work of craftsmanship, and every customer as a valued and respected part of our story. We at Richmond are proud to help Australian industry and everyday hustle and bustle run smoothly; and that begins with little details, like a solidly made set of wheels here and a reliable polyurethane lagging strip there.

What is a PU Lagging Strip For? What are the Benefits?

Similar to polyurethane lining for pipes, PU lagging serves to protect surfaces that are constantly in use and worn down by abrasion. Specifically, PU lagging strip covers the pulley on a non-drive conveyor system. That prevents the pulley’s surface from being worn down while also providing more belt friction. The added friction allows for the conveyor belt to run just as efficiently on less energy, since the pulley better moves the belt along. That friction also provides a less abrasive surface for the belt, which means there’s less wear & tear on the belt itself. In other words, the PU lagging protects all the major components of a non-drive conveyor system, allows them to run smoothly on less energy, and increases their expected lifespan.

Polyurethane lagging tends to cost a bit more, but that’s because it’s expected to last much longer than other materials used in lagging, such as rubber or ceramic. Polyurethane is highly resistant to abrasion, temperature, UV radiation, corrosion, and impact. It’s also lightweight compared to materials with similar durability, meaning it doesn’t add any disruptive weight to the system it’s protecting.

Still, due to the price of PU lagging, we do recommend checking that your pulley requires the investment as opposed to a more affordable alternative. Some pulleys can get by perfectly fine with ceramic or rubber lagging, both of which do offer solid protection and durability as well. If you’re not sure what sort of Polyurethane lagging strips best suits your system, you’re more than welcome to reach out and ask us. With some details about the machinery, we can recommend the best course of action.

The perfect partner for custom polyurethane products

For specific applications Richmond Wheel & Castor Co. can expertly manufacture polyurethane products in any hardness from 25A to 85D.

How does polyurethane compare to alternative material selections?

Compared to rubber Compared to metal Compared to injection moulded plastics
Superior abrasion resistance Abrasion resistance High impact resistance
Wide range or hardness for more application flexibility Non-corrosive Much lower tooling cost
Lighter load bearing Light weight Elastic memory
Cut and tear resistant Flexible Thick and thin section mouldings
Uv and ozone resistance Impact resistant Noise reduction
Lower cost tooling Nonconductive Lower and higher temperature range capable
Thicker sections possible Non sparking Resilience
Parts with very thick and thin sections possible Lower cost fabrication Elastic memory
Colourability Lower cost tooling compared to cast steel/iron parts Wide range or hardness for more application flexibility
Can be manufactured with a FRAS Rating (fire resistance & antistatic) Noise reduction in impact applications Abrasion resistance
Won’t damage other steel or concrete surfaces like steel components
